US Oral Mucositis
Oral mucositis is a dreaded side effect of chemo/radiation. What is the current standard of care?
A (Oncologist): Prevention is key. We use cryotherapy (ice chips) during chemo infusion for certain drugs. But once ulcers appear, we are mostly stuck with magic mouthwash—which is palliative, not curative.
B (Dental Specialist): The evidence base has changed. MASCC guidelines strongly recommend photobiomodulation (low-level laser therapy) for prevention . It reduces pain and duration significantly. Every cancer center should have a laser.
C (Hospital Admin): Lasers are expensive upfront, and reimbursement is murky. We can't bill for it easily like we can for a drug. That's why uptake is slow despite the guidelines.
D (Researcher): We need better mucosal protectants. There are new agents in the pipeline that coat the mucosa and block apoptosis, but the FDA approval pathway is tough because placebo effect is high in oral pain trials.
